Collection provides rich documentation of the personal life, literary development, and philanthropic activities of Sallie Bingham. Includes correspondence, writings, subject files, diaries and notebooks, legal and financial papers, and photographic media. Included also are records of The Kentucky Foundation for Women, a philanthropic organization founded by Bingham; THE AMERICAN VOICE, a literary journal founded by Bingham; and Santa Fe Stages, a regional theater founded by Bingham. The Writings, Diaries and Notebooks, and Correspondence series compose the bulk of the collection. There are many electronic documents that have been migrated to the Special Collections server. The Writings Series comprises over half of the collection. It includes drafts, research, correspondence and publicity related to such novels as SMALL VICTORIES, UPSTATE, MATRON OF HONOR, and STRAIGHT MAN, her memoir PASSION AND PREJUDICE, the writing and production of the plays THE AWAKENING and THE DEATH OF HENRY FLAGLER as well as poetry and many short, personal essays. The Diaries and Notebooks Series and the Correspondence Series contain material spanning Bingham's entire life -- from her adolescence in Louisville, Kentucky to her experiences living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Correspondence Series contains both literary and personal correspondence between Bingham and well-known authors, activists, and artists such as Judy Chicago and Gloria Steinem. Bingham, born into a prominent Louisville, Ky. family that owned THE LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL, worked for the newspaper as book page editor, 1982-1985. She also took an active seat on the board of the Bingham Enterprises, which was responsible for the COURIER-JOURNAL and other media corporations in the Louisville area. Bingham's desire to sell her shares in the stock in the newspaper resulted in the sale of the COURIER-JOURNAL in 1986. The Bingham family and the break-up of the Bingham Enterprises were the subject of at least four books (THE BINGHAMS OF LOUISVILLE, HOUSE OF DREAMS, THE PATRIARCH and Bingham's PASSION AND PREJUDICE) and much media attention. Materials concerning this aspect of Bingham's life can be found in the Legal and Financial Papers Series and Subject Files Series. Addition (2000-0010) (250 items, .20 linear feet, dated 1960-1999) comprises correspondence documenting Bingham's identity as a philanthropist and advocate of women writers. Also includes clippings, especially regarding the death of Robert Bingham; photographs; and a few handwritten poems. Addition (2000-0210) (1050 items, 1.70 linear feet, dated 1985-2000) contains professional and personal correspondence, writings, photographs, clippings, legal papers, and other materials. Writings include typescripts of short stories, nineteen of which have were published as GOING NATIVE; holograph poems; typescripts of the novel, THE PRICE OF INNOCENCE; and memoirs. Other materials relate to Bingham's connection with Santa Fe Stages, publishing, her family, and personal life. Addition (2000-0259) (367 items, 1.90 linear feet, dated 1941-1999) contains personal rather than professional documents, especially 17 diaries and journals. Also included are letters, writings, school reports, and photographs (1940s) kept by Bingham's mother, Mary Caperton Bingham; and legal papers, clippings, and other materials compiled by Bingham about family and business matters, including her mother's death. Addition (2000-0364) (400 items, 0.8 linear feet, dated 1991-2000) provides further evidence of Bingham's career as a writer. Materials include published volumes of her writing; correspondence; drafts of short stories and poems; journals; and two audio cassette tapes by an astrologer/tarot reader. Addition (2001-0137) (100 items, 1.25 linear feet; dated 1988-2001 and n.d.) contains drafts of essays, short stories, and a play; correspondence received; clippings; and astrological information. In addition, there are 1 black-and-white and 112 color (90 are panoramic) photographs; 2 contact sheets; 2 rolls of color film; 5 audio cassettes; and one piece of embroidery. Addition (2002-0210) (375 items, 0.6 linear feet; dated 2000-2002) contains primarily personal and professional correspondence (2001-2002) and writings (2000-2002), which include drafts of Bingham's collection of short stories, TRANSGRESSIONS; manuscripts of poems, including the compilation "The Hub of the Miracle;" and a typescript of novel, "Nick of Time." Also includes 26 color photographs. Addition (2002-0262) (4 items, 0.1 lin. ft.; dated 2002) contains corrected rough drafts of Bingham's short stories "Venus, Goddess of Love and Money"; "The Cuckoo, He's a Pretty Bird, He Sings as He Flies"; and "Roquefixade." Addition (2003-0002) (3 items, 0.1 lin. ft.; dated 2000-2001) comprises drafts of two short stories and notes for a third story, "Transgressions." The short story drafts contain Bingham's edits. Addition (2003-0003) (30 items, 0.1 lin. ft.; n.d.) contains manuscripts for 30 poetry pieces. Several pieces have corrections and directions for the typesetter. Additions (2003-0024) and (2003-0067) (375 items; 0.8 lin. ft.; dated 1970s-2002 and n.d.) comprises manuscripts of Bingham's short fiction, personal and professional correspondence, notes, and subject files. Additions (2003-0087) and (2003-0097) (2800 items, 4.4 lin. ft.; dated 1920s-2003 and n.d.) consists largely of manuscripts and typescripts of Bingham's poetry, prose, and plays ([1970s]-2003). Also includes personal diaries, 1992-2003; photographs of Bingham and her friends/family; clippings of articles and reviews; an appraisal report of Wolf Pen Mill Farm (property that contains Sallie's artist retreat); and a small amount of printed material and correspondence. Addition (2003-0126) (80 items, .2 lin. ft.; dated 1949-2003 and n.d.) consists of family letters, 1949-[1960s]; two versions of Bingham's play, TREASON; short story drafts; and other miscellaneous items. Additions (2003-0207) and (2003-0210) (275 items, .5 lin. ft.; dated 1916-2003 and n.d.) consist largely of miscellaneous writings, including notes and drafts of poems, plays, and stories. Also includes personal correspondence from friends and family (1968-2003); a folder of World War I and II-era postcards; and photographs of Bingham and other subjects. Addition (2004-0067) (240 items, 1.2 lin. ft.; dated 2002-2004) contains primarily Bingham's diaries and other writings, including plays, poems, short stories, essays, and book proposals, in draft and published formats. Also includes correspondence, files related to Bingham's son, Will Iovenko, her public appearances, and Wolf Pen Farm. Addition is closed to researchers.
